Group tours of Bennerley Viaduct

Volunteers from the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct organise a regular programme of public tours; we also welcome pre-booked groups such as the three local groups that visited in September. These included 25 people from Derby Social Circle, 15 from Thom’s Blokes, a men’s social group based at St Thomas’ Church in Chesterfield, and a group of rail enthusiasts from Nottingham’s Railways Remembered (Facebook page).

Each group had different interests, and our expert guides were able to adapt the range and content of the tours to suit. Some of the tour members shared their own memories of the viaduct, or of working on the open cast site.

The group from NRR were well up on their railway history, so the tour focused more on the engineering of the viaduct, the night of the Zeppelin attack and FoBV’s achievements since 2015. Most had visited the viaduct over the years and shared their memories and photographs from long before our project began.

There is no fixed fee for tours; donations are welcome and help us to maintain the site and develop what we can offer to the public. The FOBV volunteers involved in September’s tours: Trevor Baigent, Philip Brown, Dave Clarke, Alan Green, Ian Guest, Gary Hall, and Angie Sheard.
