Solstice draws the crowds

An estimated 2000 people – the most believed to have ever been on the deck at one time – assembled on Bennerley Viaduct to view the partial eclipse of the sun on August 12th.

Crowds converged on the deck of the viaduct to get a grandstand view of the celestial spectacle, setting up deck chairs to count down the minutes to the time when the moon would cover about 91% of the setting sun. Others strolled or picnicked on the perfectly-positioned viewing platform above the Erewash Valley, offering a superb view for those who had the correct eyewear.

“We advertised this event with the idea that quite a few people would turn up,” said a spokesperson for the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct. “What we didn’t expect was a crowd which would be the envy of Ilkeston Town! It was a once in a generation event but it symbolises the new role Bennerley Viaduct has in the Erewash Valley. It’s a place where people come together and feel a sense of community. We want to hold more outdoor events on and under the viaduct and at the new visitor centre. Drama, story-telling, art, music, natural history – you’ll see it all here in the months and years to come.”

The arrival of such a large number was a real test for the new café and its staff. Jordan and the team of volunteers passed with flying colours, selling out of pie and peas suppers and keeping up the supply of hot and cold drinks.

FoBV Trustee Glynn Lowth said it was a memorable day in the life of the viaduct. “A celestial event, the largest ever number of visitors on the deck and on the site, a superb level of service from the cafe, great teamwork by everyone and a fantastic atmosphere throughout. Everyone involved in FoBV – past and present, whether you were there or not – has helped to make possible what we just achieved.”
